09 Sep USATF Foundation to be Well-Represented in Doha
DOHA – Later this month, 115 athletes will make the long flight to Doha to represent Team USA at the IAAF World Championships. As in several recent Championships, the USATF Foundation will be showcased with 50 grant award winners scheduled to compete.
“To see our grantees competing on the big stage is always exciting”, stated Foundation CEO Tom Jackovic. “Our Foundation board and our donors take great pride in helping these athletes make it to Doha,” added Jackovic.
In the men’s throws, the USATF Foundation has several representatives including qualifiers in shot put, discus, and hammer throw. All of these grantees received a 2019 Stephen A. Schwarzman or an Elite Athlete Development grant. Following suit, the triple jumpers and decathletes all share the support of USATF Foundation grants.
On the track, the Foundation male athletes will have their eyes on medals in the distance events. Donavan Brazier, a recipient of a Stephen A. Schwarzman grant, is coming off a strong finish in the Diamond League 800m in Zurich and looking to continue his success in Doha. Brazier will be joined by his training partner Craig Engels (1500m), a fellow athlete supported by the generous donations of the USATF Foundation.
On the women’s side, the Foundation’s triple jump and long jump athletes are led by Keturah Orji (Triple Jump) and Brittney Reese (Long Jump). Both women are 2019 Schwarzman grantees and medal contenders. In addition, the rest of Team USA’s triple jump and long jump squad heading to Doha received Elite Athlete Development grants.
Those following the Foundation-supported athletes will be busy as the Foundation will have a foot in almost every race on the track, ranging from the 100-meter dash, featuring Morolake Akinosun, to the 10,000-meter run featuring Emily Sisson. Additionally, Shelbey Houlihan (1500m) usually delivers an exciting race and is looking strong after another impressive double at USATF Outdoor Championships.
